P.J. Boatwright Internship
The Delaware State Golf Association and Delaware Women's Golf Association have two paid internship opportunities available to individuals who are interested in pursuing a career in golf
administration. The internship is known as the P.J. Boatwright, Jr. Internship and is sponsored by the United States Golf Association. The following

Working at the direction of the association's Director of Competition, the intern will be exposed to all areas of the administration of amateur golf.
Working with a small, but active golf association, the Intern will experience all aspects of the operations of a golf association. This experience
includes tournament administration, handicap administration, course rating and our working relationship with the USGA. He/She should be a degree seeking
student in, business administration, management, sports marketing, or a golf industry related program. The intern will primarily be involved, with the
execution of our tournament events, but will also have some involved with our course rating team, and handicap services and administration. Intern will
report directly to the Director of Operations and will work directly with the Assistant Director of Operations on a variety of projects.
Requirements:
- Candidate must be proficient in the use of general office and computing equipment.
- Candidate must be proficient in the use of MS Office applications, primarily MS Word, Excel, and Power Point. Experience with
MS Access databases and WEB editing tools would also be helpful.
- Candidate must have good written and verbal communication skills.
Candidate must have a solid work ethic, good social skills, be goal-orientated and have the ability to prioritize and focus on a variety of tasks.
The intern will participate in the following programs and duties:
Conduct statewide golf tournaments (Approximately 15 tournaments)
- Player registration, Player handicap verification and tournament flighting.
- Prepare pairings and tee times, hole location sheets, scorecards and scoreboards.
- Prepare tournament information packets for volunteers, spectators, host club and media
- Assist Tournament Director with golf course setup and marking.
On-site tournament activities
- Player check-in
- Course setup verification (tee placement, hole location, etc.)
- Other on-course assignments (observer, marker, monitor pace-of-play, media escort, assist rules officials, etc.)
- Assist with tournament scoring, (accepting scorecards, score input, and Scoreboard duties)
- Report results to the media and on the DSGA website.
Communications and Media Relations
- Prepare and send information packets to competitors and DSGA member clubs and media.
- Provide tournament pairings and results to media as needed.
- Prepare championship summaries for DSGA Annual Meeting booklet.
- Correspondence with DSGA member clubs and contestants as required
Course Rating
- Assist our course rating team with scheduling with member clubs.
- Assist our rating team with on-site golf course measuring and data collection.
- Assist in field data entry into the CRS system as needed.
- Provide updated course rating information to host clubs, handicap vendor, and USGA
General Office Administration
- Will need to provide administrative support including typing correspondence, maintaining calendar, compiling reports, etc.
- Will need to perform general administrative functions including faxing, photocopying and mail / e-mail distribution.
- Will need to address telephone queries and direct calls as needed.
- Will assist with a variety of event related duties as required.
- Will need to maintain tournament equipment and supply inventories.
Strong consideration will be given to students who:
- Are pursing an education in or planning a career in sports administration or a related field.
- Will be juniors or seniors in college during the 2010-2011 academic year.
- Demonstrate excellent communication skills.
- Have strong computer skills.
- Have a background in the game of golf; however, golf participation is not a requirement of this program.
The duration of the internship will be: Full time for 4 months (May 1 through August 31).
