August turned out to be the month of playoffs and tie-breakers! First came the Mid-Open Championship at Deerfield Golf & Tennis Club. This event utilized tee times; Mike Chambers of Newark CC, was in the first group that teed off, and was one of four players to tie with a 70. The other players were Mark Reynolds, Jonathans Landing; Mark Surtees, Cavaliers CC; and Jim Larkin, head golf professional at Fieldstone GC. Fortunately, Chambers was available to return to Deerfield for a one-hole playoff, several hours after he finished his round; Chambers won the playoff hole!
The Senior Championship was held August 7th & 8th, at Newark CC. The field for Super Seniors was one of the event's largest since it's inception; Joe Sylvester, a long-time DSGA volunteer and past champion made an appearance to play in this event. Charlie McClaskey, The Club at Patriots Glen, won his 5th Delaware Senior Championship, and his 3rd consecutive with scores of 70-72, for a total of 142. The Super Senior Champion was Ernie Peters, Penn Oaks CC, with scores of 85-77, for a total of 162. Many of the age group flights had ties for each prize, thankfully there was no need to have playoff holes; the ties were decided by using guidelines recommended by the USGA.
The Four Ball Championship had what may be the DSGA's longest playoff in recent history! The event was held at White Clay Creek Country Club, the participants played from the Black tees, a distance of 6467, and many of you know how difficult this course plays at that yardage. However, three teams managed to tie with a score of 67. The three teams were Ralph D'Onofrio and Gary Mahoney, Delaware National CC; Warren Smith, Cavaliers CC and Buddy Reed, DuPont CC; and Mark Surtees and Tom Finn, of Cavaliers CC. D'Onofrio and Mahoney were knocked out of the playoff after the first hole. The other teams played four more holes before Mark Surtees and Tom Finn claimed the title!
The Tournament of Champions was also played at the White Clay Creek Country Club, and again finished with multiple ties! Four men tied for the title with scores of 73; Mark Surtees, Cavaliers CC; Stan Zabytko, Kings Creek CC; Buddy Reed, DuPont CC; and Pete Widdoes, Deerfield G & TC. This event was decided by USGA tie-breakers, and Mark Surtees was named champion. All the men that tied with a 73 were awarded exemptions into the 2009 Amateur Championship.
