After a three hour delay we somehow pulled off a miracle and played the Mid-Am Senior between treacherous thunderstorms at Baywood Greens, on June 9th! 130 players competed in our second Four Ball Series event. The DSGA staff had to carefully rearrange tee times and start groups off the 1st and 10th tee to get everyone on the golf course! The last group teed off around 2:30pm and were able to finish in 4 hours and 45 minutes, with cart paths only! The field competed in 5 flights, with both gross and net prizes awarded in each flight. Only two teams survived the Birdie pool; Larry Lingle, DuPont CC, and Richard Swearer, Pike Creek GC, on hole 4, and Mark Surtees, Cavaliers CC, and Frank Vassallo, Pike Creek GC, on hole 10. The Birdie pool helps support the DSGA Junior Championship.
The 2009 Four Ball with Senior Flights tournament was played on a beautiful day at Chester River Yacht & Country Club with the field playing for net and gross prizes within flights. Several teams were both low gross and net in their flights; however they were only eligible to take one prize and received low gross over low net. Kevin Whyte and Lou Peticca both of Bittersweet GC were over all low gross in the field with a 67, and Jimmy Lee, Garrisons Lake GC, and Et Kimble, Chester River Y & CC, were over all low net in the field with 62. This was the first Four Ball event in the Four Ball Series.
The Spring Classic was held April 30th & May 1st at Rehoboth Beach CC and Kings Creek CC in Rehoboth Beach. 224 participants played the two rounds in damp, cool and windy conditions. The first round was a Four Ball competition with a Stableford competition for the second round. There was ONE hole-in-one in the first round at Rehoboth Beach CC; George Phipps, of Heritage Shores GC, used a 5 wood on hole 13, a 174 yard par. There were 8 flights in this event and each flight was awarded 1st – 4th place.
76 DSGA members participated in the 2009 Tee-Off Classic held at Odessa National GC on April 21st. This was the 4th year for this event, which replaced the Spring Warm-up. This year teams played a Shamble format, in which each partner hits his tee shot, the team selects one tee shots and then each player plays their own ball from that point. We also threw in a rules quiz on hole 15! The team selected a card which corresponded to a rules question. If the team answered correctly they could hit their tee shot from the forward tee, if they answered incorrectly they hit their tee shot from the back tee!
The field consisted of 4 flights; both gross and net prizes were awarded in each flight.
