Section 9-4: Why It’s our Favorite
Yes, we’re referring to Section 9-4 of the USGA Handicap Manual which details the appropriate percentage of your course handicap to use in the most popular forms of play. Where did these numbers and percentages come from? Thousands of scores posted through the USGA Handicap System and a great deal of research and math to determine the most fair way to conduct a competition.
Remember: All percentages listed below are based on a player’s course handicap. You can calculate your course handicap using the DSGA GolfLife App, or the USGA Course Handicap Calculator. All you need is your handicap index and the slope rating for the set of tees your plan to play.
Four Ball (Better Ball of Partners): Women – 95%, Men – 90%
Individual Stroke Play: Full handicap
Best 2 of 4: Women – 95%, Men – 90%
Best 1 of 4: Women – 90%, Men – 80%
Alternate Shot: 50% of combined team handicap
Chapman: 60% of higher handicap + 40% of lower handicap
Stableford: Full handicap
